It's another day! I'm in a great mood!! Don't know why, cause, I gotta go to work tonight. Oh well, I'll take it anyways!!! A good day with a great mood...that doesn't happen too often!! LOL
So, have you ever been in a scrap funk? What do you do? Do you ignore it and go on with your life, until some scrap karma floats down on you? Do you fight through it, and insist that you're going to scrap something anyways, even though you know it's going to be horrendous? Do you blog hop, look through mags, and/or look at your old layouts to get some kind of idea? And then hope that it works out!!!
Well, that's where I was yesterday!! My scrap juju left the building, and I swear it took one of my pics that I was planning on doing an LO with!!!! Really, I can't find the pic!! It was there 2 days ago!! I looked everywhere and through everything.... and I can't find it!!!! Help....someone's taken my pic!!!! SOS!!! May-day!!! LOL!!! Good thing I can make another copy!!!
As I was saying...I just couldn't come up with any ideas...of course, it didn't help that I was missing the pic for the LO I was planning on doing. Ugh. So, I tried to fight through it....I usually don't give in and go on with my life....cause scrapping is a big part of my life!! Well, I couldn't come up with any ideas. So, I decided to blog hop, maybe find an idea....that didn't work. So I got out my mags, and lo and behold there on page 18 was an LO that I'd seen about a year ago, and wanted to do!!!! But, I thought, this is too involved, I want something easy!!! So back to blog hopping I went. Stumbled on one blog that I visit frequently, and didn't notice before, but she has a sketch blog too!!!! Well, I had to check that out. Found a sketch!!! Of course, it doesn't end there, cause once I found the sketch, I had to play with alcohol inks (you'll see) and my Cricut, and more time consuming!!!! So I went back to the first idea!!
Okay, here's the LO from the mag......
Sorry, it's a bad pic!!! I don't have a scanner and I couldn't get a copy online. This LO was made by Elizabeth Kartchner and published in Creating Keepsakes September 2008 issue. This LO is also published in the Creating Keepsakes February 2010 issue, under A Reader's Take on a Published Layout.
I have loved this LO since I first saw it, and had planned on scraplifting it a long time ago.....but I guess I got busy and totally forgot about it. I love all of the details on this page, and it would definitely make a great Child Page!!! Well, believe it or not...I really don't have any Mason pics to use for this!!! I probably have at least 2,000 or (if you include pics that Kevin took) more of him, but not one that I want to use for this.
What I really love about this page is the diamonds. I think that they are way cool!!! So I decided to use a pic of Kevin and make something 'loosely based' on this LO. See for yourself....
Before I forget.....this is a lonnnnng post!!! Trust me!!
So, it's really 'loosely based' isn't it?! I started off with G45 paper (my fave) as the background. I was trying to figure out how to make the diamonds, without getting into any 'real' math!!! That's what I meant by involved. So I got out my punches (no, I don't have a diamond one...though that would be great - just think of the possibilities!), and chose a 1 1/2 by 1 1/2 inch square from Marvy-Uchida. I punched my square from Basic Grey paper (Indian Summer Collection). But that gave me squares....so, I got out my Corner Chomper and cut the opposing corners from each square!! Brilliant, ain't I?!!! With the corners missing (1/2' corner, BTW), my little squares look more like diamonds.
Next step, cut some black cardstock....no punching here!! But it was easy...I just decided how much black I wanted to show, and cut long strips, and then the strips into squares. And guess what? Then I punched their opposing corners too!!! Glued (taped, whatever) the squares to each other, and then had to figure out placement. I do love the 'white space' on Elizabeth's LO, but after playing with my little diamonds, I decided to go right up to the edge of the paper. Then it was just a matter of drawing a straight line for each column of diamonds (it's easier to line up) that I wanted. I'm a little off in spots, but....well....I really don't care. It's the essence of the page not the perfection of it that I wanted. Wow, did I just write that? Wow!!! I'm impressed!!! Never would have said that before!!
Now it was time to move on to the brads. A few weeks ago, I picked up these big lime green Bazzill (I know! Who knew?) brads for a song - yeah they were on clearance!! Okay it's because they are lime green!! Anyways, they fit perfect with the rest of the page!! But....I only had six, and I needed seven!!! What to do? I really wanted to use those! Of course! Put a portion of the book page on top of one junction!! I told you I was brilliant!!! (You know this is going to bite me, don't you?!) Anyways, here's a close-up........
And that leads me to the other part of the LO that I really liked, which is the page from a child's book. Well I very well couldn't use a page from an Elmo book for a Kevin layout, or could I? Uhm, got me thinking here.......
Never mind, that's another layout!!! I decided to use a page from a vintage dictionary instead. I'm sure Kevin will appreciate that!!! I balled up the sheet, wet it real good, uncrumpled it a bit and smooshed it down on a piece of paper (I didn't want it smoothed out), and left it to dry --- that was slow, so I got out my heat gun! Oh yeah!!! I used a bit of Antique Linen Distress Ink, to age the page a bit more.
Now, keep in mind, that most of my LO is still blank at this point. I have the pic and I have the dictionary page, but no real plan, except my little inspirational pic from the mag!!! If you look real close at the left side of that LO, you'll see a little strip of torn paper. Well, believe it or not, this is the part that took me the longest to do!!!!! Really it did. I must have tried about 6 different strips of paper, and as many ribbons, I even tried different stickers. I spent about 2 hours on that part alone. Glueing (taping) and unglueing, and trying something else. Well, when you pick out a good paper, stick with it!!!! And that's what I finally did, I got out my scraps of the BG paper, cut a little strip and applied to left side of the page (not dictionary sheet).
Now, I had to embellish it...you know, this was a lot of work. With the exception of the diamonds, I really don't think that any part of this LO came easily to me. So, it's a guy page....get out your Tim Holtz (God bless him) stuff!!! Tickets (peeled paint distress ink), stitched on with embroidery floss, Grunge board hinges which were alcohol inked and then distress inked until they looked like leather!! Still, I was missing something....and I couldn't figure out what! So, back to my stash of stuff I went. Found this cool faux leather ribbon, well that was too perfect! And you know I had to attach it with copper colored staples (sorry Tim, I don't have a tiny attacher). Had to add the philosophy tag in the upper left corner of pic. And I was still missing something....so again, I played in my stash....found this cool lacy type stuff, but it sparkled!!! Well, you can't tell on the pic, and I really can't see it on the LO....probably cause I scrunched it up before I stapled it on. It was all finally coming together!! Check out the close-ups.....
I just needed to journal something. Of course, even this was hard!! All I could think of, was Kevein being goofy in front of the camera ----he's a photographer...he's usually on the other side of the lens --- he was playing and testing his lighting before he took pics of us!!! And naturally, he was goofing around!!! I have a set of 3 more pics that I have to do a 2 page LO -- these are hysterical, but that's another LO!!!
So, are you tired of reading yet? Well, I'm tired of typing!! So use the bathroom (you know you need to), then grab a snack and a drink, and come back for round two!!! I told you it was going to be a long post!!!!!
So the second 'loosely based' is from a sketch by Aymee Gandy. Check out her blog at A Scraphappy Southernbelle - top right side bar is her sketch blog!!! Click on that, and you'll find many sketches, including this one......
Cool, isn't it!!! I know, it's a Halloween sketch, but hey, it's a good one!! And it gave me a great idea for an LO of a family pic from DS Dan & DIL Carol's wedding pics. Here's my take on it......
When I say 'loosely based', I do mean "loosely"!! I had been playing with die-cutting some major pieces with my Cricut. Plus a while back I made these alcohol inked (thank you for Tim!) transparencies, and I wanted to put the two together.
So, get out a transparency, and on the side that you would normally print on, start squeezing out some alcohol inks and blending solution. Play with your colors until you achieve the look you want. Let dry!!! Very important to NOT put a wet transparency into Cricut (this is my safety advice -- plus you don't want to void the warranty!). I chose this floral flourish from Home Accents Cartridge!! Love how it turned out!!
Now, I wanted to add another flourish on top of it (like the sketch) but nothing I tried, looked good...so I gave up on that. So the next part was to get the pic (Basic Grey paper mat) and the laces onto the background paper (Bazzill cardstock). I found a few pieces (SEI & Making Memories) in my stash that worked well with pic. Then I got stuck!! I tried so many different things, too many to mention! Nothing was working...so I walked away for a bit. When I finally came back, I decided to try rubons, just to add a little something (esp black), since I couldn't use another flourish! Well the corner Gothic looking rubon is from Daisy D's, and the sentiment at the bottom is from Kaiser Craft. I even applied a rubon on the left edge of the page...ugh that was ugly!!! But now, I was stuck -- I already had the rubon on the paper, and I couldn't undo everything else (yes, I actually used glue for the lace!!!!), so what was I going to do!!! Plus, everything was looking out of whack!!
So.....I said it before, when you get a paper you like, use it!!! so I cut a strip of BG, just big enough to cover the rubon!! What a waste of a rubon...oh well....not every layout comes together easily!!! Now, you can't see it, but the edges of the lace & ribbons looked like crap!! It just looked unfinished! Well, I love flowers, so I started playing around with some, but nothing was working. I tried yellow, orange, looked for black, but I really had nothing in my Prima stash or my own handmade stash!! Back to the drawing board.....what was I going to do?! After I had exhausted every possibility, I happened to look up on my shelf, and what did I see?!!!! Some cream faux silk flowers that were left-over from another project!!! Well, I was sold! If you buy faux or real silk flowers, you know that their centers are usually thick and bulky. Not conducive to putting in an album....well take out those centers and use brads instead!!! I love those K&Co brads from their Que Sera Sera Collection!!! And the colors are perfect & I even had 2 packs, so enough to do 3 flowers!! Here's a close-up.....
Okay, we're almost done!!! LOL! Next step, play with placement!! I tried several different ways, including lining them up in a row, right on top of the lace. That actually looked pretty good, AND it covered both edges. But, I still had to add my title, and placement of that was important too!! I tried the top right side, but that was goofy looking! Stuck again!!! Finally, I gave up on it...yes I did!! I didn't have any black alphas, the ribbon edges were yucky, and I couldn't decide where to put the flowers. Plus, the left edge looked unfinished.
That's when I decided to start cleaning up and start putting everything away. I figured that it just wasn't meant to be finished right then. While I was in the process, I picked up some scraps of the BG paper, and it occured to me, that I needed to add more of that on the layout.....so, I tried diamonds (that's the pattern on this paper! (weird huh?). Nope. Then I decided to punch some circles...maybe that would help with the edges....nope! So, I cut them in half....that didn't work for the lace edges, but it looked good around the pic and the left edge strip! Sold. Plus, it gave me that other flourish...I know it's not, but it gives the same effect, sort of! That's what I did...and then I packed everything up and said, "I'll finish it when I get some black alphas". Done!
Nope, I got up this morning, and there was the LO starring at me (my studio is in my bedroom) and mocking me with "so you gave up! you're not going to finish me, are you?" I ignored it, and went about my business!!! Did some blog hopping, checked emails, paid bills, ate, packed up some scrappy goodies for a SWAP and a Kit Challenge at PIT, & finally mailed off my last RAK to Denise! (Erika never emailed me with her address - so Denise was next!! And she emailed me right away!!!)
Now, I'm at the computer, and it dawned on me that I could just type a title!!! I knew about what font (Pristina) that I wanted and the color was easy, so why not try it!! Once printed and cut, I tried stamping on the corners, but that didn't look right. I tried plain...that was, well too plain!! Finally I remembered that I still had bits & pieces left from that Daisy D's rubon pack...so that's what I did! Pretty easy, right?! LOL, definitely not for the last day of scrapping!
So what do you think? I know, lonnnng post!!! Okay, next time I promise to cut it into 2 posts (had to do it this way - gotta go to work tonight, and won't be blogging again til next week!), really I promise!
Aside from that....we all scraplift at one time or another!! Because, we all need inspiration, we all have days when our scrap juju, mojo, muse, etc, is not there! And let's face it, we can't always be cranking out stunning layouts. Okay, maybe Ingvild can...check our her blog My Paper Art - see what I mean!!! You know, I could name a few more & you know who you are! So let me know...do you have days like mine? Cause I really wonder if the Paulien's and the Wendela's and the Nike's of the world have those kind of days? It would be interesting to find out!!
But that takes me away from making my point....which is 'loosely based'! So we scraplift, and we try to keep it just like the LO we just lifted!! You don't have to!!!! Have fun with it (or in my case, don't), play with it, move things around, change the colors, etc. It's not like someone else's LO or sketch is written in stone! It's just their point of view and how they put it on paper! Pun intended!!! So, use what you can, throw away what you don't want or like (or in my case, doesn't work) and make it your own!!! The whole point is to get you going again!!
Well, I hope that you enjoyed this post, and that it will help you. So what are you waiting for, get scraplifting....'loosely based'!!
Love ya,
Lynne
